New album "Joanne": Lady not Gaga at all

Lady Gaga's fifth studio album is released today. Even if you would hardly have thought it possible: Lady Gaga shows a completely different side.


Lady Gaga is one of the most successful artists of our time. We got to know her with extravagant costumes and pop hits such as Poker Face, Alejandro and Bad Romance. The new album "Joanne" is a surprise: much of what outsiders considered Lady Gaga is thrown overboard here.

Lady Gaga wants to establish a deeper connection with listeners with her fifth album. According to her own statements, she is just a product and many people do not perceive her as a person. The lead single "Perfect Illusion" is also about this.

"Diamond Heart" road trip through the USA

After three pop albums that experimented with rock, EDM and techno elements and a joint jazz album with Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga is now moving in the direction of country and rock. Even the introduction to the album "Diamond Heart" sounds like the soundtrack to a road trip through the USA: while Gaga used to create hits for the dance floor, this album contains songs for disreputable bars. Fittingly, there was also the album promotion tour that Gaga did together with beer producer Bud Light through various bars in the USA.

Together with main producer Mark Ronson ("Valerie", "Uptown Funk"), Gaga delivers an album with many facets. "Come to Mama" sounds like a track from a Motown-inspired musical, "Dancing in Circles" sounds like a country sex song. Nevertheless, the music on the album could be sung by a complete stranger in a smoky bar and nobody would notice that it's Gaga's music.

Names of her deceased aunt

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Lady Gaga's real name, has not only made her middle name the album title, but also the name of her deceased aunt. She had never met her, she only knew that she was artistically inclined and drew a lot. These drawings can also be seen in the album booklet. She died at the age of 19 from lupus, an autoimmune disease that Lady Gaga also suffers from.

Gaga has taken a big risk with this album. These are not songs that you would expect from her. That's why some fans will probably turn away from her - at least temporarily - but she could also win new fans with the album and some promotion. The sound for the dance floor is missing, but she provides the soundtrack for a night in a wicked bar.

Nonetheless, Gaga is consolidating her reputation as a talented musician here, as many still have the preconception of the disguised plastic pop Gaga. After the jazz album, many of Gaga's fans were expecting Gaga to return to her old familiar pop. But that seemed to be a perfect illusion.
