Thrilling Blue Balls start

23/07/2016 written by Nina Müller
Just in time for the official start of the nine-day Blue Balls Festival 2016, the sun suddenly appeared on Friday evening in Lucerne after a lot of rain. Festival director Urs Leierer was elated and opened the festival and the photo exhibition by photo shooting star Mark Peckmezian, who also portrayed the Blue Balls Face 2016, British singer Shura, at 7 pm.

While Shura and Air opened the festival at the KKL with electronic music, the white hall of the KKL next door was a little quieter. Frances, just 22 years old and alone at the Steinway grand piano, impressed with her highly nuanced voice and expressive songs. The young singer was nominated for the "Critics Choice Award" at the Brit Awards at the end of 2015, has the same management as British chart-topper Sam Smith and is a discovery for festival director Urs Leierer.

Ibeyi - gripping Afro-Cuban world music

The second concert in the White Hall was given by the duo "Ibeyi" from Cuba. Ibeyi - that's the twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Díaz. With a mixture of soul, African vocals, electronic sounds, downbeats and African percussion, Ibeyi brought a gripping mix to the stage. Ibeyi cannot be pigeonholed, because the two sisters, one dressed all in black, the other all in white, take world music to a whole new level with their mixture of big city beats and Afro-Cuban roots singing.

Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz were born with their talent - they have dedicated their debut album to their late father Anga Díaz, who was a percussionist with the Buena Vista Social Club.
