There's no question that the Graubünden band Breitbild is pretty much the most intelligent thing going on in Swiss-German hip-hop at the moment.

Nothing new has been heard from the five rappers for six years, yet their new album "Breitbild" went straight to number one in the charts this spring. This is actually a miracle, as the boys are aimed at an older audience.

What the musicians have lost in teen credibility, they more than make up for with cleverly processed life experience: on "30 ischs ds neua 50", they lament the passing of their own generation, for example, or talk about social trends such as wellness weekends as a substitute for religion. The puns are packaged for radio - anyone who doesn't at least nod their head and tap their foot along to "Out on Luv" must be half-dead.

Before Pharrell, Breitbild heat up the Piazza

Breitbild's music doesn't sound overproduced, but rather old-school authentic: it strums and rattles as if the prosecco pros and ghetto prophets sung about were personally responsible for the songs. After reaching number 1 in the charts, Phlegma, Vali, Thom and Hyphen have now been given the accolade of opening for superstar Pharrell Williams (43) at Moon & Stars in Locarno. In terms of applause, he could experience a blue miracle compared to his opening act.
