Swiss figure skater Sarah Meier (32) will be demonstrating her skills again next year at Art on Ice. She actually wanted to quit completely after the 2015 edition, but she made an exception for James Morrison, as she revealed to us in a video interview.
After retiring from professional figure skating in 2015, you will be returning to Art on Ice next year. Why is that?
I was surprised myself. At the time, I said that I would only come back for a guest appearance by James Morrison. Now that he has actually been engaged, I have to keep my word, of course.
How much have you had to change your life?
I had to check with my work colleagues to see if the commitment could be reconciled with my 100% job. And of course I also asked my boyfriend and my family. It's important to me that those around me support me.
You got to know James Morrison. What's he like?
Very relaxed, he was in a great mood. It's going to be a great time with him. I can't say that I was pleasantly surprised, because that's exactly how I imagined him (laughs).
How steady are you on the ice?
Last year, I was never on the ice from August to January. After that, I had to train for smaller shows and I noticed that I quickly got back into shape. Nevertheless, I have to train now, which is why I train after work and don't go home.
What exactly do you train?
At the moment it's still about general fitness. I'm already fit, but I have to get used to the ice again. For example, I have to break in my skates. As soon as I know the songs I'll be skating to, I'll start practising the routine.
Is your comeback a one-off?
Yes, it is. Because of James Morrison. I don't have a list of other artists that I would make an exception for. If the Red Hot Chili Peppers were to come on, I would watch them from the audience.
