Swiss Cup Zurich: Everyone is hoping for Giulia

04/09/2017 written by Cécile Klotzbach
On November 5, 2017, the Hallenstadion will once again host the annual autumn highlight for all gymnastics fans in Switzerland: the 35th Swiss Cup Zurich! This sporting event is a showdown between the international gymnastics elite.

Will Giulia Steingruber shine again this time?

For once, not everyone competes alone or in a team of the same sex, but as a pair: one female gymnast and one male gymnast from each country form a duo. The two athletes compete one after the other and the scores of their routines are added together to form a total score.

This exciting pairs competition mode alone, which was adapted last year (10 teams in the preliminary round, 6 in the semi-final, 3 in the final), guarantees that the 6,000 or so fans in the Hallenstadion will once again be swept off their feet. In 2016, Ukrainian Olympic parallel bars champion Oleh Vernyayev and gymnastics partner Angelina Kysla thrilled the crowd with their successful title defense - ahead of the stars from Germany (2) and Russia (3). There were also standing ovations for Team 1 from Switzerland with Ilaria Käslin and Pablo Brägger, who narrowly missed out on the final in fourth place.

Which great gymnasts will you be cheering for this year? Of course, everyone is hoping to see our vault queen Giulia Steingruber (23) again, who always marks the Swiss Cup Zurich as a favorite event in her annual calendar. Last year, after the bronze medal sensation at the Olympics in Rio, she only shone as a speaker in Zurich due to a break for regeneration. Six years ago, Steingruber won the Swiss Cup Zurich with Claudio Capelli - the first and so far only Swiss duo to do so!
