In October, when Basel smells of bread and roasted almonds because of the Autumn Fair, the big tennis stars traditionally come to the city on the Rhine. However, you won't find them on the Chilbi courts, but on the tennis court in the St. Jakobshalle.
And this year, too, it will be exciting to see who wins the Swiss Indoors, which has prize money of over CHF 2.2 million. In addition to Stan Wawrinka (ATP 4), the Spaniard Rafael Nadal (ATP 5), the Japanese Kei Nishikori (ATP 6) and the Canadian Milos Raonic (ATP 9) have also announced their participation. Together they form a field of favorites from three continents.
Katherine Jenkins opens the tournament
Since its inclusion in the series of "ATP 500" tournaments, not only has the prize money increased, but also the worldwide interest in the tournament. Last year, the pictures were broadcast on TV stations in over 175 countries. There is something on offer not only on a sporting but also on a cultural level. The tournament will open with a performance by Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and the Basel Sinfonietta. Rafael Nadal will then play the first match.
