Soon they'll be flying, dancing and spinning again. The 2018 World Figure Skating Championships are casting their shadows ahead. In Milan, the fashion capital of Europe, the world's best athletes will put on a show in a class of its own.
For five days, from March 21 to 25, 2018, the "Mediolanum Forum" will be transformed into a temple of emotions. The opening day already has it all: after the women's short program, the opening ceremony at 18:00 will give you goosebumps. Immediately afterwards: the couples' short program.
Who will excel this time? At the last World Championships in Helsinki, ice hockey country Canada was the most successful nation. The maple leaves won an entire set of medals - gold, silver and bronze. The focus back then (and probably also in Milan) was on the legendary ice dancing pair Tessa Virtue (28) and Scott Moir (30).
When the two super talents from Ontario met, they were not even ten (!) years old. But they "clicked" right from the start. They have long been the most successful ice dancing pair in history, Olympic champions (2010) and three-time world champions (2010, 2012, 2017). What's more, the duo from London - we're not talking about the capital of England here - hold the world record for the best score in the history of the sport! This season, the pair are celebrating their 20th anniversary as an ice dancing couple. "That means a lot to me," says Virtue. "We've experienced so much, so many memories together. And the anniversary shows that we're getting old!"
Their anniversary year will be crowned with an Olympic victory in Pyeongchang (from February 9) - and the World Championship title shortly afterwards. Will they succeed in the "Herculean task of double gold"?
One thing is certain: the hearts of the spectators in Milan will fly to Virtue and Moir, but also to everyone else. Spectacle is guaranteed!
