Year after year, thousands of visitors flock to the respective venues to see the country's best wrestlers. The wrestlers engage in thrilling duels in the sawdust. The festival is not only a sporting highlight, but also a cultural event that celebrates Swiss traditions. This year in Burgdorf, a special atmosphere is created in which tradition and modernity blend harmoniously.
The Oberaargau (01.08.) and Emmental (03.08.) regional association festivals and the Bernese Cantonal Wrestling Festival (11.08.) will be held in Burgdorf on three different dates. Musical performances and a large marquee provide the best entertainment. Schwingen is a traditional Swiss wrestling sport in which two opponents attempt to throw each other onto their backs using special holds. The whole thing takes place in a sawdust ring and the fighters are equipped with typical so-called Zwilchhosen. The participants only use these Zwilchhosen to dominate their opponent and achieve victory.
