Bryan Adams surprises with his 17th studio album «Roll with the Punches» – and proves after four decades that real rock'n'roll never goes out of fashion.
Okay, this is getting personal. I admit: I'm a fan of Bryan Adams. Ever since I was 16. Back then, I even went to my hairdresser with the album(!) cover of Reckless because I wanted to look exactly like Bryan. Poor Gisela at the scissors was completely overwhelmed. So much for now.
About the album: Even if Rolling Stone doesn't have a good opinion of the Canadian's 17th album – I like it. And I can justify that: Bryan delivers a solid rock album. Straight out of the textbook. A mixture of explosive riffs and emotional clarity. With «Roll with the Punches», the Canadian returns to his roots with clear rock'n'roll energy – and it really hits the spot!
The title track, co-written with legendary producer Mutt Lange, is an instant reminder of their past magic. With driving drums, crunchy guitars and a hook-heavy chorus, the song packs a punch. «Make Up Your Mind» continues the momentum with an uptempo pop-rock groove reminiscent of Adams' 80s heyday. And «A Little More Understanding» is more catchy, both lyrically and sound-wise. With dirty blues riffs and a darker tone!
So much for the music. In short: «Roll with the Punches» is worth it. And it's also worth taking a look at the man behind it: As a person, Bryan Adams remains perhaps the best rock'n'roll role model a 16-year-old at the time could have chosen. He is committed to aid organizations, picks up his guitar for people who have been scarred by life and is committed to protecting the environment and supporting the victims of disasters. His concert proceeds have gone to numerous charitable projects, including Live Aid, Amnesty International and saving the rainforest. He also set up his own foundation, the Bryan Adams Foundation, to help people in need around the world. Oh yes, he is also an excellent photographer.
No one can say I didn't warn you that this was going to get personal. «Will We Ever Be Friends Again» asks the last song on the album. Logically, Bryan. That's what we've been all these years! «Straight from the heart». And we've come closer with the hairstyle. Bryan Adams will be at the Hallenstadion on 19.12. I wonder where I'll be then?
