"Soy de Cuba": how people live and love in Havana

13/03/2017 written by Mohan Mani
Off we go, right into the heart of the Cuban island. A dreamlike dance musical based on a true story. At least in part.

"Soy de Cuba" translates as "I come from Cuba". The dance musical of the same name is making its first guest appearance in Switzerland. Young Ayala flees from a provincial town to Havana to try her luck as a dancer. She quickly gets to know the dark side of the glamorous and glitzy world, where intrigue, jealousy and rivalry are the order of the day. But Ayala doesn't let this get her down. She instinctively knows that she will prove herself to everyone and win the heart of the love of her life.

Almost like Dirty Dancing

The musical is based on a partly true story. The dancer Yanetsy Ayala Morejon, after whom the main female character Ayala was named, comes from Vinales. A valley in the province of Pinar del Rio, where she grew up with her grandparents. Morejon longed to go to the capital Havana to learn to dance. It was there that she was discovered by French producer Nicolas Ferru in 2009. He described "Soy de Cuba" as his own Dirty Dancing, in which Morejon plays the leading actress.

As a composer at the piano

The catchy songs were created especially for the dance musical and were penned by Cuban music legend Rembert Egues. He began his career over 50 years ago with the group Sonorama 6 and has since been musical director and conductor of renowned orchestras in Cuba and the USA. At "Soy de Cuba", the composer himself will also be on stage every evening at the piano and as musical director with the ensemble.
