Album of the week: "Dua Lipa" is hotter than hell

02/06/2017 written by Annika Hagemann
With her debut album, Dua Lipa shows who she really is - an artist who can do far more than just create dance songs.

The artist

Despite her young age, the 21-year-old singer already has many stories to tell. At 15, she persuaded her parents to let her leave her home country of Kosovo to pursue her musical career in London. She worked in a restaurant and recorded cover songs by her icons - such asChristina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado -on the sideand put her tracks on YouTube. Her career took off when she appeared in a promotional trailer for the British talent show "The X Factor", which brought her to the attention of Lana Del Rey's management team, who immediately signed her to a contract. Last year, Dua Lipa experienced her breakthrough in the pop scene with the singles "Hotter Than Hell", "I'm The One" and "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)". She won the NME Best Newcomer Award, and a documentary film about her called "See in Blue" has already been released.

The album

Dua Lipa's fans had every reason to be frustrated because the release of her debut album was postponed three times - it should have been released in September 2016. But the time has been good for her album, as the musician has since been given the chance to record new songs and collaborate with big names such as R&B singer Miguel and Chris Martin from Coldplay. The entire album is intended to show who she is and how she wants to be perceived as an artist - hence the simple album title "Dua Lipa". Many fans already have six of the 17 tracks in their ears, as these were pre-released as singles and quickly landed in the charts. There are other pop earworms on the album, as well as dreamy and acoustic tracks.

Verdict

With her debut album, Dua Lipa manages to surprise her fans with her range. The singer clearly cannot be pigeonholed as a feel-good pop singer, but shows her intimate and dark side alongside her dance songs - "dark pop", as the singer herself describes the style. The love song "Homesick" particularly stands out from the list of songs because it shows the listener the soft facets of her voice and is accompanied by Chris Martin and a light piano melody. The pop songs, which are already known as singles, complement each other well alongside new electro-pop dance tracks such as "New Rules" and "Dream", which are sure to be played in many dance clubs thanks to their fast rhythms.

Recommended tracks

"Last Dance" - pure electro-pop, in which the singer's powerful voice comes into its own.
"Homesick" - a song in which Dua Lipa shows a new side to herself.
"Room for 2" - dreamy chorus, strong lyrics. Close your eyes and enjoy.

Dua Lipa about her album

"I want my audience to really get to know me, so my debut album is about everything that's happened in my life so far. Every song tells a different story... So far the public only knows my pop moments, but there's some pretty dark singer/songwriter stuff that I'm really excited about."
