World premiere at the Hallenstadion Zurich: the classical works Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Carl Orff's masterpiece "Carmina Burana" have been translated into images by a film director - these will be shown alongside the concert.
"We want to help people understand classical music better," says Michael Zukernik, the conductor of the New Year's Eve event, explaining the idea behind the elaborate event. "In the beginning, we thought we needed nature images from the BBC or the Discovery Channel" to visually translate the classical music, explains the 46-year-old Moscow-born conductor and percussionist. "Then we spoke to directors and graphic designers and realized that this would distract too much from the music." So Zukernik hired the Italian visual designer Jacopo Castellano, who, together with an eleven-strong creative team of technicians, graphic artists and designers, set to work to cast the music of the two classical works into images in the best possible way.

They did this with theVideotrack: in this video technique, the director starts with real image material and then alters it. "We analyzed the harmonies and the music," explains director Castellano, who lives in Berlin. "We then selected images from the real world, these went into post-production, we alienated them and synchronized them with the music." The resulting Gesamtkunstwerk will be shown on three giant screens in the Hallenstadion Zurich on New Year's Eve. The Warsaw Festival Orchestra will perform, accompanied by a choir and soloists.
