Men’s EHF EURO: Unleash the Extraordinary
The European Championship, organised every two years by the European Handball Federation (EHF), brings together the sport’s leading nations from both the men’s and women’s game in an unparalleled showcase of elite talent and skills. Europe’s biggest handball arenas come to life as one of the continent’s most prestigious national team events takes centre stage in January: the Men’s EHF EURO.
The 18th edition of the Men’s EHF EURO will add a new chapter to the tournament’s legacy, with the world's best players competing for continental glory between 13–30 January 2028 across three host countries — Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland.
Celebrating European handball excellence since 1994
The first edition of the Men’s EHF EURO, held in 1994, marked a significant milestone in the sport’s development across the continent, opening the first chapter in the competition’s history. With just 12 nations in the line-up, the tournament crowned its inaugural champions in Portugal, as Sweden began to establish itself as a dominant force in European handball.
Since then, each edition has strengthened the tournament’s status, transforming it into an unmissable event on the global sports calendar and seeing six different winners lift the trophy. Over the years, the Men’s EHF EURO stage has witnessed the rise of young talents and the brilliance of handball’s legends, with emotions at an all-time high — from moments of heartbreak to grand celebrations, every tournament delivered unforgettable action.
With each edition raising the level of the competition, anticipation is building ahead of the Men’s EHF EURO 2028, where handball powerhouses promise to advance excellence in every aspect of the game.
A thrilling return to the roots
Experienced hosts with rich sporting tradition, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland are set to deliver a memorable Men’s EHF EURO 2028, with four venues ready to welcome the 24 participating teams. The preliminary round in Valencia, Lisbon, and Zurich will set the early pace, with Valencia and Lisbon also hosting the intense battles expected in the two main round groups. The journey will reach its climax in Madrid, where the final weekend will unfold, crowning the next European champions.
The 2028 edition has added significance, marking a symbolic return to its roots. Portugal and Spain staged the first two tournaments in 1994 and 1996, respectively — and now, three decades later, the two nations that shaped the competition’s early history will join forces with Switzerland to host the Men’s European Championship once again.
Fans at the heart of the action
Throughout the years, the Men’s EHF EURO has grown into more than a tournament — it has become a driving force for excellence and a place where sporting prowess, raw ambition and endless passion meet. While players have delivered standout performances on the court, fans have drawn attention to the stands with their loyalty and unwavering support. Europe’s major arenas have welcomed countless fans who have helped shape the sport along the way, turning each edition into a true celebration of handball. And now, fans are once again expected to fill the arenas in Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland for another landmark edition of the European Championship.
